BLADETRICKS F1K PERSIAN KARAMBIT, BLACK G10

The F1K is one of the more complex knives I build: a ringed karambit handle under a persian style blade. This one is the updated version — my progressive grind, and a black G10 karambit handle instead of micarta.

The Progressive Grind

I used a compound grind on the F1K for years: two distinct angles, one for the point and one for the edge. It worked, but it interrupted the line of the edge. The progressive grind replaces it. The angle rolls continuously from acute where the edge starts near the handle to considerably more obtuse at the point, with no step anywhere along it. Same result at both ends — a robust penetrating tip and a shaving sharp slicing edge — with nothing left to catch, a cleaner line, and a blade that is easier to maintain and sharpen.

The Ringed Handle

The characteristic karambit ringed handle gives good control of the blade in all positions. Its generous dimensions take that further: the F1K can be held in every grip position, with a finger through the ring or without using it at all.

The Black G10 Karambit Handle

Black G10, sculpted by hand into the same facets as the micarta version, epoxied and pinned. The whole knife runs dark — black scales, dark blade, dark ring — and the only bright surfaces left on it are the bevel and the pins. The bevel is what you read the grind by: it opens and closes along the edge, and that line is the progressive grind made visible.
